VPI is a shortening for virtual path identifier, an eight-bit field in an ATM cell header that identifies the virtual path (a bundle of virtual channels which have the same endpoint) that the cell belongs to as it travels through an ATM network. Refer VCI for more details. An ATM switch uses either the VPI, the VCI, or a combination of both to route the cell to its destination.
